Lines are vital in conceptualising: the concrete three-dimensional physical world, the abstract realms of the creative imagination, and the frontiers of scientific and mathematical ideas. Lines can represent trajectories, or profiles over time, be used in mark making and calligraphy or define boundaries of form, tone and texture.
Internal Rhythm is a linear art theory developed by Dr Zeenath Ul Islam
It is at these linear edges where we have the boundary constraints in mathematics, or where outliers exist in the fringes of the normal distribution’s bell curve which are of most interest to study across disciplines from economics, politics, sociology and psychology to science, mathematics and art. Internal rhythm extends the use of line to represent mood trajectories thus linking the psychological state with the artistic canvas.
I am obsessed with line
Internal Rhythm is a linear art theory developed by Dr Zeenath Ul Islam. To explore this theoretical framework in practice Zeenath continues to produce a body of work including paintings, sculptures and performance.

I put science in unconventional places
“My interests lie in the tension between the visual and the psychological. I am an artist and am passionate about art in the community. As the German artist Joseph Beuys said, “Everyone is an artist” and thus I try to get involved in community art projects. Mental health is a very important topic with lots of fear and stigma attached. To raise awareness I got involved in OOSOOM and exhibited my art in Edinburgh. I am obsessed with line. As a STEM ambassador I put science in unconventional places as indicated by my illustrations of the Roslin institute and Big Data.”
